Developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979, MBSR is based on a form of meditation known as mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a basic human quality, a way of learning to pay attention to whatever is happening in your life that allows you a greater sense of connection to your life inwardly and outwardly.

Nearly three decades of scientific research all over the world suggest that training in mindfulness and MBSR can positively and often profoundly affect participants’ ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress while learning to live life more fully.

Most people completing MBSR report they gain lasting benefits such as:

  • More energy and enthusiasm
  • A greater capacity for relaxation
  • An increased ability to handle stressful situations
  • Better ability to manage fear, anger, anxiety and depression

Meet Your instructor: Greg Satya Shanks

Greg is a licensed clinical professional counselor in private practice in Missoula and is trained in Core Competencies in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy with Seattle-based Telos Transformational Therapies. He has practiced mindfulness and meditation intensively for more than thirty years and was ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order in 1984.

Greg completed his undergraduate studies in psychology at Manchester University in England and his graduate studies in counseling at the University of Montana. He has served as a hospice chaplain providing spiritual support and grief counseling to hospice patients and their families locally. Living in an intentional spiritual community for 20 years and practicing meditation intensively integrated with his somatic-based and neuroscience approaches led to a specialization in applying mindfulness to healing trauma.

How You’ll Learn:
The Mindfulness–Based Stress Reduction Program is an intensive eight-week training to empower participants to take an active role in the management of their health and wellness. The classes meets weekly for 2.5 hours and there is an all-day session in the sixth week. The class is group-based and is more akin to an adult education class than traditional group therapy. Participants are asked to practice mindfulness meditation and/or mindful movement for 30-45 minutes a day with instructional audios.

This program has improved thousands of participant’s ability to live and cope with chronic pain, illness, stress related conditions, and the stresses of everyday life. By learning to actively participate in the management of health and well being, many participants report they are better able to manage stress, fear, anger, anxiety, and depression both at home and in the workplace. Participants have stated that they feel less judgmental and critical of themselves and subsequently to others. Many also report a decrease of the frequency and length of medical visits to hospitals, emergency rooms, and health care professional offices. There has also been a noticeable decrease in the use of prescription and non-prescription medications.
